About Dr. Moon

Dr. Poppy Moon, Ph.D., LPC-S, NCC, is a seasoned counselor educator, supervisor, and certified school counselor with over two decades of experience in school and clinical mental health counseling. She currently serves as an Associate Professor and program lead for the School Counseling Program at the University of Louisiana Monroe. Additionally, she is the Clinical Experiences Coordinator for both school counseling and CMHC students.

Dr. Moon earned her doctoral degree in Counselor Education from the University of Alabama, focusing her dissertation on sand tray therapy. Her expertise spans play therapy, art therapy, and human development.

Dr. Moon’s dedication to counseling is evident in her teaching and use of artistic methods in therapy. At ULM, she developed and teaches the “Expressive Arts in Individual and Group Therapy” course, reflecting her commitment to using imaginative methods to support healing and growth. This course allows students to explore how art, music, drama, and other techniques can be effectively applied in therapy with individuals and groups of all ages.

Dr. Moon extends her creativity beyond the classroom into counselor supervision. She finds fulfillment in teaching fellow supervisors how to integrate these methods into their work and applies them in both clinical and school practicum and internships. Her goal is to empower counselors to develop their skills and create meaningful change. As she says, “There is magic in what we do. We change lives.”

Dr. Moon is an accomplished author and illustrator of guidance-related games, books, and videos with Youthlight. Some of her notable works include Operation Breaking the Boy Code, Operation Breaking the Girl Code, Operation Breaking the Middle School Code, Kicky the Mean Chick, How to Be a Bully – NOT!, and Trusty Becomes an Upstander. Her book The School with No Rules earned a Mom’s Choice Gold Award, while two other illustrated books, Brad Takes a Bite Out of Meanness and Princess Priscilla and the Bully Bee Day, received Mom’s Choice Silver Awards. Her first game, Snoots Toots! A Kid’s Guide to Empathy & Manners, won a Dr. Toy Best Game Award.

In addition to teaching and writing, Dr. Moon collaborated with Cengage to create a series of educational videos on topics such as sand tray therapy, poetry walls, self-portraits, and puppet techniques. She also partnered with Out of This World Productions to create the video Good Friends/Bad Friends & How to Know the Difference.

In 2015, Dr. Moon received recognition as the Alabama Elementary School Counselor of the Year.

At the heart of Dr. Moon’s work is a commitment to fostering creativity in all aspects of counseling and supervision. She continues to inspire and empower her students and colleagues to embrace fresh approaches, ensuring the counseling field evolves to meet the diverse needs of clients in an ever-changing world.

Dr. Moon lives in Alabama with her husband Patrick, fun dog Fin, and 3 cats named Jinxie Jangles, Neville Nimbus, and Lenore.
